Warning that "a large number of populations and species are likely to become extinct in the present century," in a declaration published in the July 20 issue of the journal "Nature," 19 scientists and policy experts from 13 countries proposed a global coordinating mechanism to provide a united, authoritative scientific voice to inform government decision making internationally. The experts said a useful model for the proposed biodiversity advisory body is the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
A consultation process (Consultative Process Towards an International Mechanism of Scientific Expertise on Biodiversity) has begun that will shape such a panel within 18 months (www.imoseb.net).
