Environmental and social policy at Oréade-Brèche

The management at Oréade-Brèche has established an environmental and social policy which will be driven by the main following principles outlined below:

o   Energy savings and greenhouse gas emissions: In 2008, Oréade-Brèche calculated its carbon footprint to see how it could reduce the carbon emissions generated by its activities. The results showed that Oréade-Brèche produces 40 kg eq.CO2 per k€ turnover (not including sub contractors).  Carrying out this study has increased the employees’ awareness of the environmental impacts of their daily activities and they have already begun to find ways in which they can cut down on their CO2 emissions, in particular by limiting trips, which are the company’s principal causes of greenhouse gas emissions (47%). Several other measures have been taken:

  • Setting up a video conferencing system in the 3 agencies and favoring Visio-conferences or conference calls, particularly for internal meetings between different branches, but also with the clients when it is possible
  • The preferential use of the train rather than the car or plane for business trips (taking into account that for some badly-served places, employees still have to regularly take the plane)
  • Support for using environmentally friendly transport, i.e public transport or car pool for home/work trips (50% of the cost of the public transport card is paid by Oréade-Brèche to encourage the employees to use public transport for their daily journeys. Half of the team has taken advantage of this)
  • Energy-saving in the branches: heating control by one-room thermostat and no air conditioning in new, renovated or well-insulated buildings
  • Within the framework of its ethical and environmental commitments, and in order to compensate part of its carbon emissions, Oréade-Brèche supports the Nebeday NGO in Senegal who supervises community reafforestations.

o   Reduction of pollution by household waste sorting, re-use or recycling:

  • Salvage contract for ink cartridges
  • Salvage and recycling for used paper and other recyclable waste (plastic, glass).

o   Consumables and equipment

  • Systematic use of energy-saving light-bulbs in the offices
  • Dematerialization of supports as far as possible (reports are sent by email in PDF format, subscription to electronic signature SG-TRUST for electronic signature handing)
  • Purchase of recycled paper for  printing
  • Use of double sided printers
  • Through an internal charter the staff has agreed to avoid useless printing, use double sided printing, plus 2 pages per sheet, re-use one sided printed paper  as rough paper and sort paper for recycling.
  • To encourage printing savings, the following sentence is  systematically included at the end of emails sent by the employees:
P Please consider the environment before printing this email
  • Energy consuming and recycling possibilities are taken into account for purchases (environmental-friendly fridge, low electricity consummation, computer recycling, etc.).

o   Sustainable consumption

  • Purchase of office stationary from a work-aid organization (ESAT)
  • Coffees, teas and herbal teas consumed in the company come from fair trade or organic farming (AB certification)
  • Dish washing soap and other cleaning products are eco-certified with the European label.

o   Continual organizational improvements and the consideration of their environmental impacts, particularly by the annual updating of the environmental policy.

Furthermore, issues concerning protected areas, nature conservation (water, soil, climate, biodiversity) and resources have been at the heart of the company’s activities for more than 30 years.
The company states its commitment to apply this policy, notify all the staff, to post it on its website and to make it available to all external parties who inquire about it.
