America

Since the end of the 1990s, Oréade-Brèche has been involved in assignments in South America, Central America and in the Caribbean.
The principal interventions in these territories relate to: evaluating policies of co-operation, impact studies on agricultural sectors (fair trade), feasibility studies/monitoring/evaluation of projects, i.e. sustainable management of the forests and conservation of the biodiversity.

Feasibility study and drafting of the project note for the project of the adoption of sustainable mode of production and consumption habits for products and services produced in protected areas and the surrounding territories.

Client(s) : French Global Environmental Facility (FFEM) - 2014
Since 2005, the Uruguayan Ministry of Environment deploys its national system of protected areas (SNAP). In 2014 the country has ten protected areas. The strategy of SNAP, under development, includes the dimension of sustainable development. To implement this strategy, the SNAP wants to promote the adoption of sustainable production and consumption of goods and services produced in protected areas and adjacent territories, contributing to the protection of natural and cultural heritage, improving the economic performance of chains and the living conditions of residents and strengthening the governance of territories.
For that, SNAP has requested funding to FFEM to test in three pilot sites strengthening sustainable supply chains, based on the French model of regional natural parks and their related brand Park.

The Oréade-Brèche consultants have reviewed, the feasibility of the project presented by the SNAP for the establishment of sustainable activities in protected areas and their adjacent territories. Three sectors were studied: rural tourism, meat production on natural pastures, and lagoon artisanal fishing. The three sectors have been analyzed to confirm the appropriateness of their development, clarify the environmental and heritage attributes attached to these sectors and that can be valued, private actors and institutional holders of the approach in the pilot sites to be involved, and potential markets to develop.
Exchanges with the French federation of regional parks and Vercors and Camargue parks, as well as with French and Uruguayan research organizations have enriched the project.
The result of the study is the project document, in French and Spanish, which has completely revised the project, its context, its content, the institutional arrangements and financial elements.
